Sommerfeld Apples

I just got back from Mountain View Farmers’ Market in my search for this very unique apple! It’s uncommon that I need to go that far to buy fresh fruit as we, luckily, have lots of great Markets in Oakland, but Sommerfeld apples are a rare find and only a few farmers grow them, these ones are from Live Earth Farm located in Watsonville.

This variety is a mix between a Gala and a Fuji and it's the perfect apple for my Apple + Rye Whiskey pâte de fruit. I discovered it 3 years ago when I started testing this flavor. Sometimes I had to use other varieties because I couldn't find Sommerfelds (it's an early variety) and the results weren't comparable in texture and flavor.

Sommerfelds are very juicy (specially this year) full of flavor and with a perfect sweet tart balance!
